Ripple Labs has secured regulatory approval from the New York Department of Financial Services for its US dollar-backed stablecoin RLUSD, clearing a crucial hurdle for the blockchain company's expansion into regulated digital payments.

Chief executive Brad Garlinghouse announced the approval on 10th December 2024, saying exchange and partner listings would follow. XRP rallied following the announcement, although contemporary market reporting showed a considerably larger move than the 3.9% stated in earlier reports, with CoinDesk recording a rise of around 10% at one stage.

RLUSD is designed to maintain a one-to-one value with the US dollar. Each token is fully backed by US dollar deposits, US government bonds and cash equivalents, with Ripple committing to monthly third-party attestations of its reserves.

Garlinghouse said, "Early on, Ripple made a deliberate choice to launch our stablecoin under the NYDFS limited purpose trust company charter, widely regarded as the premier regulatory standard worldwide."

Ripple subsequently confirmed that RLUSD would launch globally on 17th December, initially becoming available through platforms including Uphold, Bitso, MoonPay, Archax and CoinMENA, with further listings planned.

The company intends RLUSD primarily for financial applications including cross-border payments, remittances, treasury operations and settlement. Its approval also gives Ripple a regulated dollar-denominated asset alongside XRP, which performs a different function within the XRP Ledger ecosystem.

Garlinghouse said, "Greater regulatory clarity in the United States could accelerate adoption". He added, "We expect to see greater adoption of stablecoins like RLUSD, which offer real utility and are backed by years of trust and expertise in the industry."

The approval represents an important expansion of Ripple's digital-asset business as stablecoins increasingly emerge as infrastructure for payments and institutional blockchain transactions.
